PTC Completes Acquisition of Kepware

This week PTC announced that it has completed the acquisition of software development company Kepware.  The acquisition gives PTC Kepware’s communications platform to help enhance their current IoT technology portfolio and help accelerate the company’s entry into the IIoT market.

What CES Taught Us about the IoT

Last week at CES there were quite literally thousands of IoT connected products on display.   Fortune’s Stacey Higginbotham recapped what all of these innovations mean for the growth and maturity of the IoT.  One of the most notable trends Stacey identified was one that we at LogMeIn have also been talking about.  The IoT is not about the one-time purchase of devices anymore, but also about the add on services that are allowing companies to take advantage of new business models.

How the IoT will Impact Washington

The Huffington Post recently ran a story on how the IoT will present new policy challenges in Washington.  With all the data that connected devices can gather, privacy is a real issue.  There have only been 3 hearings in Congress focused on IoT.  The HuffPost noted that there were over 3,600 companies launching 20,000 connected products at CES.  The IoT is growing rapidly and Washington needs to move very quickly to catch up.

Inside the Mind of Consumers

A recent blog post in Forbes, shines a light on the right way to leverage the IoT for marketing purposes.  First and foremost, you must understand the consumer’s state of mind.  Not all device interactions are equal.  There are certain places consumers may be open to an interaction with a company – like watching TV for example.  And others where you may not want anything at all.  The IoT gives marketers a window into the home of consumers and because of that it’s their responsibility to not “forget about the human component”.  None of us want to be inundated with messages and offers throughout our homes.  If the industry can figure out the right balance, it will provide a lot of value for both consumers and companies.
